Following a successful Prefeasibility study completed in 2024 under the European Union Eureka Innowwide Project WEB, Project WEBEW (Wave Energy Barbados for Electricity & Water) will implement Wavepiston’s innovative industrial wave energy technological solution, providing a source of clean ocean renewable energy to diversify the national energy mix whilst provisioning desalinated potable water for the Greenland St. Andrew Data Centre and surrounding communities.
The WEBEW project is a continuation of collaborative efforts between the Government of Barbados via Export Barbados (BIDC), a state owned enterprise within the Ministry of Innovation Industry Science & Technology (MIST) and Wavepiston. Wavepiston will through a phased approach, implement its solution to provide ocean renewable energy and desalinated potable water to the Ocean Valley Data Centre and Industrial Park in (“Greenland”) St. Andrew, Barbados. The project will support the Green Industrial Gateway Advantage (GIGA) Programme and augment Barbados’ and the Latin America & Caribbean (LAC) region’s ambitions for ocean renewable energy, thus creating synergy with the European Union 🇪🇺 Global Gateway Multi-Country Action Plan supported by CCREEE, EuroClima, UNDP Barbados Eastern Caribbean.
The partnership builds upon three years of established collaboration between BIDC, the Coastal Zone Management Unit (CZMU) and Wavepiston. In January 2026 a renewed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Barbados Investment & Development Corporation (BIDC) and Wavepiston following the success of the Eureka Innowwide WEB Project.
